November 30, 2009 Fall clean-up time. We have plenty of water now, in the form of rain drops! A critical part of having plants flourish in the spring is keeping the fallen leaves under control now. Most leaf blowers and mowers have mulching capability and I like to use mulch to keep plants, such as roses, protected from freezing. Reuse and recycle and reduce waste = good for everyone! Hope everyone has a great holiday season. ___________________
I just brought home my first dog ever. She is a seven-week old Gold Retriever pup. We also corresponded bringing her home with the installation of our new synthetic lawn backyard, and she LOVES IT! There is no mess and no burn out spots to re-seed or fertilize. It is especially nice because she isn’t bringing in a muddy mess on her feet every time we take her out to play or go “potty”—now, that being said I can tell you even with the beautiful and easy to maintain lawn, and her clean little paws running back into the house a pup is A LOT of work! We take her out at least twice during the night and she is really starting to get the hang of it. Also, the turf drains so any liquid (i.e. puppy urine) goes right through the turf and is no more. Cleanup of her puppy “surprises” has also been a breeze and the turf remains nice and green. Just wanted to share the fun news! ___________________
July 13, 2009 During the planting season this spring we transplanted many tree starts including cedar, alder, fir, Madrona, and many varieties of 2-4 year old blueberry bushes around our property. Blueberries are considered a “super food” high in antioxidants and vitamins—proven to be beneficial in slowing degenerative diseases, helping with motor skill function and fighting aging. The idea is to grow enough for the whole neighborhood to enjoy, so far we pretty much eat all of them but hey, it’s their first year here so there aren’t that many. Blueberries are great in smoothies, cereal, muffins and other baked goods. They are most beneficial in their raw state. To find more about the benefits of blueberries and for recipes click here. ___________________
July 10, 2009 I have encountered many people who want a small synthetic lawn area to use for their pets. A great size for a “dog run” is 15’ x 20’. Lawn turf comes in 15’ wide rolls, and an area 20’ long provides room for even the largest of dogs. If you are limited by the size of your yard, a 15’ x 10’ is also adequate. There are many synthetic turf lawn products available now with anti microbial properties...these are especially handy when the dog run area is used for animals to relieve themselves and will limit any odors. ___________________
July 1, 2009 With all of the sun the Pacific Northwest (I realize the linking the word “sun” and “Pacific Northwest” may seem like an oxymoron) has received this spring and early summer many homeowners are experiencing the summer “brown-out” of their lawns. To save millions of gallons of water annually, many homeowners have converted to synthetic turf lawns. They are so clean, and take far less time and energy to maintain. No more gas powered mowers, no harmful chemical pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers—simply blow off your synthetic lawn with a leaf blower as needed. And where we live, no sunshine is required either! ___________________
March 20, 2009 TODAY IS THE FIRST DAY OF SPRING! With all of the rain we have received over the winter months (snow too, if I remember correctly!) many people are experiencing moss problems at an alarming rate. To control moss on your roof, driveway, steps, etc, I like to use Lily Miller’s Moss Out! We had our first daffodil blossom on Thursday morning, so I am seeing signs that winter is actually over. ___________________
March 14, 2009 Many people I speak to are looking for natural products to use for various applications in their yard to prevent or kill weeds. My favorite, safe, organic product is a clove-oil based formula called Burnout II. I found the very best prices on this product online at www.yardiac.com. Hope this little tid-bit helps the organic gardeners in my neck of the woods. ___________________
February 20, 2009 We have a new turf product available that uses locally grown soybeans to replace over 90% of the petroleum based backing materials on turf products. This product is called Envirocel (Universal Textile), and like all of the turf we use is manufactured in the US. ___________________
January 31, 2009 Many private labs have done testing on turf for harmful chemicals and heavy metals including lead. All turf used in Advantage Greens & Lawns/Synthetic Turf Northwest is manufactured here in the United States, which carries much more stringent guidelines for quality assurance and control of product than anywhere else in the world. The manufacturers here in America are frequently inspected at random by the FDA so we know with certainty that our turf meets all |
